A wet welcome to the growing season from Mother Nature. Weather this year in North Central Indiana has been characteristically dramatic. Recently, highs in the mid 80’s followed by lows in the mid 20’s not 48hrs apart. That with some warmer than average temperatures have landed us in a similarly jump-started spring as last year. Looking back at pictures from 4/1/25 shows that our fruit trees are actually further ahead this year. Apples were squarely in half-inch green, and pears were in bud burst. All we can do is hope for a mild April and March, otherwise fruit crops might take a significant hit this year.
In Meigs related news, the new manager (as of May 25’) is settling in well, and applying his previous experience in commercial orchard production. Brian Schilling hopes to improve pruning practices and make more informed pesticide application decisions. Our orchard tractor, the JD 5520N, is about ready to run this season after a complete engine replacement. Thank you to our mechanic at TPAC, Pete Illingworth!
